Flyball is a fun and fast-paced dog sport that involves a team of four dogs competing in a relay-style race. Unlike many other dog sports, flyball is a team-based activity. Each of the four dogs must jump over a series of four hurdles, retrieve a ball from a box, and return over the hurdles to the start/finish line. The next dog then repeats the process until all four dogs have completed the course.

Who can participate?
Flyball is open to dogs of all breeds and sizes. Dogs must just be big/heavy enough to trigger the flyball box and small enough to be able to do a swimmer's turn on the box. This includes most breeds as small as a staffie to as large as a golden retriever. Border collies used to dominate the sport, but in recent years there has been a large variety of dogs coming through the ranks. Any dog that is physically fit and enjoys fetching can participate. Generally, to get started, dogs should have a toy drive and a good recall. The sport is a great way to engage and bond with your furry friend.
What makes flyball unique?
Flyball offers a unique combination of excitement, speed, and teamwork that makes it captivating for both participants and spectators. The fast-paced races, energetic dogs, and enthusiastic cheerleading create a lively and engaging atmosphere at flyball competitions. As a team sport, participants need to know each other's dogs well and each has an investment in the others' success. This brings with it a camaraderie between handlers that no other dog sport can match.

The benefits of flyball?
Engaging in flyball can have many benefits for both dogs and their owners. It provides physical exercise, mental stimulation, and an opportunity for socialization. Additionally, flyball can help build a strong bond between the dog and its handler as they work together as a team.

How to get involved in flyball? There are clubs that offer flyball in Gauteng, Natal and the Western Cape. Most clubs will have an assessment that will include basic skills like showing drive and doing a recall. In Cape Town's southern suburbs specifically, Cape Province Dog Club offers the sport in Pinelands. More information can be obtained from their website on www.capeprovincedogclub.co.za
